Apps and Learning

Are Apps, devices and classroom learning merging? Do some participants now expect to be able to use devices to enhance classroom learning? As facilitators are we expected to manage a room of participants with only half an eye and ear on us, with the rest…somewhere else?

I recently attended an event in Singapore. The topic was Digital Transformation and...

Bite-sized Learning

I am a Millennial.  Being born in the early 80’s makes me one of the early Millennials, the internet might have been invented when I was pretty young, but it wasn’t accessible to me until many years later.  I still remember excitedly running the telephone extension cable across the lounge and hearing the handshake tones of the modem… sounds that a lot of Millennials born a little later, will probably never hear.  As my generation continues to come of age (i.e. has money to spend) and...

Innovation

I received an email today with a link to the opening of Visa’s innovation centre here in Singapore.  I received this email whilst surrounded with a different type of innovation…at my kid’s school.

The children have been planning today for many months.  They worked in teams to devise a ‘stall’ at the Market Day and even had the chance to pitch ‘Dragons Den’ style to parents for investment.  Of course as a proud parent I played my part and went along, but I was truly impressed at the level of innovation demonstrated by...

How important are your customers?

As a newcomer to Singapore I am beginning to experience a lot of things that visitors don’t have to be involved in, like dealing with with utility companies and of course, communicating with banks.

When working with clients on training events that contain coaching topics, we introduce two key types of feedback that can be given to individuals; Motivational (to build confidence) and Developmental (to build competence).  We also follow an established methodology to ensure feedback is constructive and clear.  Let’s try to apply these principles to my recent experience.…

Do we really only have 10 years to make out professional mark on the world?

I attended a networking event recently and got into a very interesting conversation about ageism in Singapore.  My new companion explained:

“When you are aged less than 30, you are deemed too young to offer anything of real value in the workplace.  When you reach 40, you are past your peak and begin to add less value as you age.”

I listened to this viewpoint with great interest. I began to think about the ages of the people that I had interacted with during my relatively short time here.  It is true that many of the people that I had encountered in entry-level positions in shops and restaurants were young and generally under 30 or thereabouts, but I don’t feel …

Qualifications in Singapore

We have been working pretty hard of late. Most of our amazing team have been involved in proposals and pitches over the last few weeks and we have had some great success, and some surprise disappointments too.

I’d like to share a recent experience that I had when evaluating an opportunity in the public sector in Singapore.

The requirement was to deliver some Captivate training. Captivate is software that allows you to create simple eLearning without having to know / use any code. It’s used by a lot of companies to create training on in-house applications and is something that we use to create eLearning for our clients. We have also delivered end-user training on this application for many years...

Customer service from within

Our clients regularly tell us how important great customer service is to their overall experience when conducting a business transaction. While it seems that many organisations agree with this – at least on paper – it often seems that their customer service is lacking in practice.

I recently visited a local home furnishings store to make a fairly large purchase. Home delivery was available at an additional cost, and the delivery services counter was located next to the customer service department. I reckon that people generally pay a visit to a Customer Service department for one of two reasons: they want a refund of items purchased and / or they want to complain...

Don't forget the Advisors

At a recent networking event I heard the following. “We have spent so much money training our management team on technology, business aims and objectives, and even management strategy, but it doesn’t seem to be making any difference”.

This is a common complaint in the training world – but it really doesn’t have to be. While many training programs focus on training managers, they often leave the front line staff in the lurch. Training aimed at front line team members is often heavily focused on systems and process, with a little bit of customer service thrown in for good measure. This isn’t effective, and Jumping Bean Training knows how to fix the problem.
